Where it all began

Raphael Kofi Attachie, the fast-rising Ghanaian singer-songwriter and producer who trades by the showbiz name Camidoh, is among an outstanding crop of young innovators leading the nation’s pop revival.

Noted for his cloying vocals, transporting lyrics and majestic stage performances, as well as a growing catalogue of radio staples in his home country and on the continent, Camidoh’s music unravels in richly ambitious experimentations across multiple languages and across an expansive spectrum including but not limited to Afropop, highlife, soul and neo-R&B.

Camidoh, a native of Aflao in the Volta Region,  is the first of three children and was raised by a single mother and educationist named Christiana Dzifa Fudjoe. He is an alumnus of the Bishop Herman College in Kpando and the University of Professional Studies in Accra. He cites Senegalese-American popstar Akon, who was introduced to him by a cousin circa 2005, as a primary technical model.

Before embarking on his solo career, Camidoh was part of Belce, a music duo he co-founded with KD Bakes while in high school. The group was signed to MyCo Music in December 2008, migrating to 3FS Productions in April 2016. The group disbanded a year after.

Where we are

Camidoh published his breakthrough single, the Darkovibes-assisted ‘For My Lover’ in 2018. Self-produced, the record, as well as subsequent submissions by the musician have received widespread plaudits for Camidoh’s fluid, authentic and progressive take on West African pop and fusing it with western sounds. He was also hailed for his inventive incorporation of Ewe, his native language into his compositions. ‘Yawa’, ‘The Way’ and ‘The Best’ (featuring Kelvyn Boy) followed, drilling down his artistic value to local audiences.

In June 2020, having found his footing in Ghana’s highly competitive mainstream with the aforementioned singles and a streak of powerful pop covers, Camidoh issued his first body of work, the groundbreaking six-track EP titled Contingency Plan. The collection, a byproduct of the COVID-19 lockdown and a contender for EP of the Year at the 2021 3Music Awards, was released to instant approval by industry watchers and music fans alike, It was led with ‘Maria’, a joyful love song produced by Nektunez (who also helms production on Contingency Plan). Other highlights from the airtight project are ‘TikTok’, ‘Find Me’ and the redemption song ‘Hot Pursuit’.

In July 2020, reviewing the EP for pan-African platform, pop critic Gabriel Myers Hansen observes that the work listens as a “resoundingly original interpretation of the sounds that make up Afropop - which nowadays encompasses everything from highlife to soul, adding that the collection is an “arresting sonic take on themes that beset a young man who has come into full awareness of his gifts and the forces that constitute his obstacles.” Elsewhere, he describes the man behind the project as “a better style bender than his seniors,” one blessed with the gift of “reinventing melodic tendencies in real-time and amplifying this sonic interflow. This harmonious enmeshment is probably Camidoh’s most inventive contribution to Afropop and/or Afrobeats.”

Vision & Accomplishment

Thematically, Camidoh leans towards the love motifs that R&B often dictates. However, he is not restricted to that as, over his career, he has explored other concepts with poignant perfection.

In writing the next chapter for music in these parts, the singer’s main vision is to inspire people. It accounts for his thoughtful lyricism and the soulful appeal of his sound.

While he is often referenced as the next big artist from Ghana, Camidoh’s sights are set on global plains, starting with his soon-to-be-released debut full-length. Comprising 14 tracks, the album features elite colleagues including Amaarae, Kwesi Arthur and Manifest, among others. The project will be released on Grind Don’t Stop/ GB Recz, to which he is currently signed.

Additionally, he hopes to leverage his star power into philanthropic causes including raising funds for mothers stuck in hospitals across the country due to their inability to foot their bills.

Camidoh is a five-time 3Music Awards nominee, including securing the nod for ‘Best Vocal Performance’ two years in a row (2020 – 2021). He has also assumed ambassadorial roles with a number of corporate entities, including Sonotech Medical and Diagnostic Center, Millennium Promise Alliance Ghana and most recently with the e-commerce platform Ololo Express Digital.

With an impressive stack of toothsome submissions, and a work ethic that saw him play over 50 gigs in 2020, comprising private parties, weddings, corporate gigs and all major awards shows in Ghana, as well as a UK tour before COVID-19 hit, resulting in him being among the first people to be placed in mandatory quarantine by the government, it is safe to predict that the only way for Camidoh is up.
